Oracle? A strategic priority for CIOs? Nope, says Goldman Sachs

Summary of the expense survey changing to new world technology providers.

Oracle is among the losers of the legacy technology in a Goldman Sachs expense report that questioned key information officers about the purchasing areas they consider to be top priorities in the next six months.

The research group of the bank's Semi-Annual IT Expenditure Survey analyzed the top 10 things that CIOs said they intended to spend. Little had changed since the end of 2017, with SaaS, BI / analytics and public cloud applications falling below the top dog security, as reported by The Street.

About 10.4 percent of respondents plan to spend more of their company's cash on security, compared to 10.1 percent on the previous research note in December, which is not surprising after a mixed smorgasbord of well-publicized infractions.

Endpoint, analysis and management of identities remained in the first place for specific security products. Only 9 percent said they would spend less on security devices, which could damage the portfolios of companies, including Check Point, McAfee and Symantec.

Nearly 8 percent of CIOs said they will spend more on software as a service.
Redmond wins Big Red

In terms of the public cloud, AWS, Microsoft and Google were the three big winners, but that will not surprise anyone, since the triumvirate already has most of the market sales.

"While we remain bullish on the overall opportunity of the public cloud, we see an increasing number of companies facing the realities and challenges of migrating workloads and platform reconstruction applications," said Goldman Sachs.

"As companies come to the conclusion that their IT paradigm will likely be hybrid for longer than anticipated, this dynamic continues to benefit spending on facilities."

Almost half of respondents chose Microsoft as their "most strategic" BI / analytics provider, with 37 and 33 percent saying the same for AWS and Tableau Software, respectively.

This change in attitude could be to the "detriment" of some of the old-world players, including Oracle, SAP and Teradata, according to the report.

Big Red has changed its products a lot to the cloud, but was criticized last month after it was accused of obfuscating the weakness of the cloud by changing the way it reported business segments for its Q4 by combining its services in the cloud and license support. in one category and licenses in the cloud and local in another.

In a conference call at the time, Oracle's co-CEO, Safra Catz, denied that the company was making its sales in the cloud more, well, overcast. "They do not hide ... we do not have bad news," he said.

In terms of hardware, PC spending forecasts were "significantly strengthened". And on networks, Cisco and F5 Networks were expected to take market share at the expense of HPE, Dell EMC, Arris Ltd, Arista and Juniper Networks.

Storage was one of the top 10 contenders in the expense category, rising from eighth to sixth place, displacing big data platforms. The intention to spend on the private cloud went up from fifth to fourth place.

The intention to spend was at its second highest level since 2002, when Goldman began the survey for the first time.
